What We Are Reading: Sharing this week's library picks

Hey mommas! Today I'm trying out a new topic/series, "What We Are Reading". I am excited to share with you the books the kids and I picked out from our local library. These are books geared toward 3 and 5-year-olds (as that is how old Bubs and Sofie are). Hopefully, this post will give you some ideas for the next time you make it to the library or bookstore!

Note: all books are linked to Google so you can get more information. These are not affiliate links, I just thought they would be helpful for you!

Our town library has a huge collection of children's books. I feel so blessed to have such a great library available. If you have a library near you, I highly recommend checking out their selections and programs for kids. Ours offers storytime, after-school programs, and more.

I little about our Library Trips

To begin, I wanted to give you all a little insight into our library trips. When I was working full-time as a teacher, we only ever had time to go to the library during the summer. During the school year, I always felt so guilty that I was providing a classroom library and pushing my students to try new books, but didn't do the same with my children. Instead of library runs, we would stick to the books we already owned and reread them a dozen times. What I didn't realize then was that this was not a bad thing and I didn't need to feel guilty! Sofia and Bubs have grown to love re-reading books over and over, which is why we do a big library haul once every 2-3 weeks, and then we read each book over, and over, and over. I see a lot of value in this style of reading. One, my kids love it, and two re-reading books can build word recognition, bonds with characters, and a full understanding of the text. So every time we go to the library we leave with 3-4 books each. Let's talk about what we picked next!

Bubba's Picks

Bubba loves pretty much anything. His favorites right now include counting books and animals. This week he picked:

  1. 10 Little Excavators by Annie Bailey

  2. The Octonauts The Frown Fish by Meomi

  3. Swallow the Leader by Danna Smith

Books 1 & 3 are both counting books and number 2 is one of his favorite shows.

Sofia's Picks

Sofia loves anything with a "cute" cover. Animals, magic, and mythical creatures are all right up her alley. In the past few months, we even started doing longer chapter books. She does not read them herself (although she will pretend often) but loves a longer story that can be read over several nights before bed. We have done Disney's Descendents books and Disney's Moana, and now are moving on to Unicorn Diaries. This week she picked:

  1. Unicorn Diaries Bo's Magical New Friend by Rebecca Elliott

  2. The Sleepover by Sergio Ruzzier's

  3. Mermaid Kenzie Protector of the Deeps by Charlotte Watson Sherman

  4. Pretty Minnie in Hollywood by Danielle Steel

Note: I do not pick their books for them. I let them explore and find their own except for the longer chapter books Sofie likes. I will find a series I think she might like and then let her pick if she wants it/or which one she would like to start with.

That's all for today mommas! Let me know in the comments or on my Instagram post if you like seeing what we are reading & what books you are reading in your home! I love any book inspiration so do be shy!

💕💕sending you love & momma to momma support,

Kaylin
